Mood and Post-Partum Depression
Pregnancy and the postpartum period are times of extreme emotions. One of the reasons for this is the change in hormone levels. It is not uncommon to feel down and some people may feel depressed. Normal ups and downs and “baby blues” are worth talking about and seeking support. But prolonged periods of low mood, or any thoughts of self-harm or harm to the baby are reasons to seek help and start medications. Your doctor will likely be asking you about your mood throughout this time, and please do not hesitate to talk to your doctor especially if you would answer “yes” to any of the following questions:
1. During the past month, have you often been bothered by feeling down, depressed or hopeless?
2. During the past month, have you often been bothered by having little interest or pleasure in doing things?
